America the Beautiful Day 17: The End of America is Greatly Exagerated
It’s not hard today to find an article or op-ed in the media discussing the end of America. The collapse of Greece, and the eminent collapse of a number of other European countries, we would be crazy not to examine our own future. China and India both appear to be on the rise, so it’s easy to predict a new world with China and India as the top dogs. But should we count America out so quickly?
America has been on the rise since at least the end of the Civil War. One thing we have always had going for us is American Ingenutiy. We have invented a number of things that have changed the face of the planet. Take as a small list the sewing machine, telephone, air conditioning, airplane, television, rocket engine, computer, laser, microprocessor, cell phone, and internet. That ingenuity hasn’t left our nation and probably isn’t likely to leave soon.
This isn’t to say we have nothing to worry about. Our debt and our social commitments can lead us down the same road Greece has gone down. We have tough decisions to make ahead if we are going to prevent that. But there is still time. And while other nations such as China and India appear to be on the edge of greatness, they have their own problems to contend with.
The story of our great nation is an incredible one. However, I think we are a long way from the final chapters.

Nov 18, 11 at 10:36 amour debt is a concern. Our social commitments are a concern as to how it adds to the debt but a bigger one I have is the attitude of the American people.
For example:
The occupy protesters are starting to get angry at the fact that sitting/living in a park and holding a sign for two months is not fixing the “problems.”
In Georgia the lottery funded college scholarship fund HOPE is not able to pay out as much. People are claiming because this reduction in funds means less people are going to college. So we only want to better our life it is free?
Hell even some of that ingenuity that our corporations have only happens if the government will pay for it. Alternative energy is one example. The government is so willing to pay for it why should would a company put up their own money to develop it? They know they will get millions of dollars a year of somebody else money if they succeed or not year after year.
